Since 1985, the Office of Employee Development has partnered with colleagues across Boston College to advance the growth, effectiveness, and ongoing formation of staff and leaders.

Mission

The Office of Employee Development (OED) facilitates the growth of individuals, groups, and the larger institutional community in the tradition of Jesuit Catholic formative education. We design, develop, and deliver a range of services, including leadership and team development, facilitation, training, coaching, assessment, and well-being to drive individual and organizational excellence.

Who benefits from continuous learning?

Employees benefit from continuous learning

By participating fully in any learning activity, you:

  • sharpen current skills and acquire new ways to apply them on the job
  • increase the value you bring to your role and department
  • have an opportunity to meet others across the University and learn from their ideas and experiences

Supervisors benefit from continuous learning

By committing the time to people development, you have employees who:

  • are more motivated, focused, and productive
  • show improvement in their job performance
  • bring a fresh approach in getting their work done

Boston College benefits from continuous learning

By investing in its employees, the University gains and retains employees who:

  • are better prepared for Boston College’s future
  • use their skills, knowledge, and talents for the overall good of the campus community
  • contribute more fully to the University’s mission and goals

Ìý

At Boston College, development is more than acquiring new skills. In the Jesuit, Catholic tradition, formation is the integration of personal growth, professional excellence, and discernment in action. Our work supports colleagues in deepening self-awareness, strengthening leadership capacity, and aligning their work with the broader mission of the University.

Through workshops, leadership programs, team development, and organizational consultation, we create structured opportunities for reflection, learning, and application. Participation in development is not simply an expectation of one’s role–it is an investment in our shared responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the University’s mission and to one another.

Our programs advance the University’s core competency of Continuous Learning by fostering growth that is both individual and collective. We support employees not only in enhancing job effectiveness, but in shaping fulfilling careers, building resilient teams, and strengthening the institutional culture that sustains Boston College. In doing so, we view employee development as both a professional responsibility and a formative journey–one that unfolds over time and strengthens the whole community.
